Day 15: Because of Love

Because of Love!! “this is a true story”

A brother and sister had made their usual hurried, obligatory pre- Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt their elderly parents with their small herd of horses. The farm was where they had grown up and it had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine, which topped the hill behind the farmhouse. Through the years the tree had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside. The young siblings had fond memories of their childhood here, but the city hustle and bustle added more excitement to their lives, and called them away to a different life.

The old folks no longer showed the horses, for the years had taken their toll, and getting out to the barn on those frosty mornings was getting harder, but it gave them a reason to get up in the mornings and a reason to live. They sold a few foals each year, and the horses were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at day’s end.

Angry, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the old folks “Why do you not at least dispose of The Old One.” She is no longer of use to you. It’s been years since you’ve had foals from her. You should cut corners and save so you can have more for yourselves. How can this old worn out horse bring you anything but expense and work? Why do you keep her anyway?”

The old man looked down at his worn boots, holes in the toes, scuffed at the barn floor and replied, ” Yes, I could use a pair of new boots.”

His arm slid defensively about the Old One’s neck as he drew her near. With gentle caressing he rubbed her softly behind her ears. He replied quietly, “We keep her because of love. Nothing else, just love.”

Baffled and impatient, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley.

The old couple shook their heads in sorrow that it had not been a happy visit. A tear fell upon their cheeks. How is it that these young folks do not understand the peace of the love that filled their hearts?

So it was, that because of the unhappy leave-taking, no one noticed the smell of the insulation smoldering on the frayed wires in the old barn. None saw the first spark fall. None but the “Old One”.

In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze and the hungry flames were licking at the loft full of hay. With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved horses. But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back. He sank sobbing to the ground, helpless before the fire’s fury. His wife back from calling for help cradled him in her arms, clinging to each other, they wept at their loss.

By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife, exhausted from their grief, huddled together in front of the barn. They were speechless and stunned as they rose from the cold snow covered ground. They nodded thanks to the firemen as there was nothing anyone could do now. The old man turned to his wife, resting her white head upon his shoulder as his shaking old hands clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red bandana. Brokenly he whispered, “We have lost much, but God has spared our home on this eve of Christmas. Let us gather strength and climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair. We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared and pray for our beloved most precious gifts that have been taken from us.

And so, he took her by the hand and slowly helped her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own tears with the back of his old, withered hand.

The journey up the hill was hard for their old bodies in the steep snow. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they paused to rest, looking up to the top of the hill, the old couple gasped and fell to their knees in amazement at the incredible beauty before them.

Seemingly, every glorious, brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering, snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised on its top- most bough, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this. They were breathless as the old man held his wife tighter in his arms.

Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy. Amazed and mystified, he took his wife by the hand and pulled her forward. There, beneath the tree, in resplendent glory, a mist hovering over and glowing in the darkness was their Christmas gift. Shadows glistening in the night light.

Bedded down around the “Old One” close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe.

At the first hint of smoke, she had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the horses through it. Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping cautiously through the snow. The foals were frightened and dashed about. The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under them as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits. The mares that were in foal with a new years crop of babies, pressed uneasily against the “Old One” as she moved calmly up the hill to safety beneath the pine. And now she lay among them and gazed at the faces of the old man and his wife.

Those she loved she had not disappointed. Her body was brittle with years, tired from the climb, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift —LOVE. Because of love. Only Because of love.

Tears flowed as the old couple shouted their praise and joy… And again the peace of love filled their hearts.

This is a true story.

As I sit at work and listen to my Pandora “Duffy” station, I realized we haven’t heard about or heard any music from Amy Winehouse in a while!  She is one that is so talented but, has let her addiction and lifestyle take over her.  How sad is that?  Such and amazing beautiful God-given talent she has!   Ironically I have found an article on her…or about her, rather?  http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2010-11-16/features/sc-fash-style-news-hells-angles-amy-w20101116_1_alexander-mcqueen-hells-angels-motorcycle-club-zappos

Yes...they tried to make her go to rehab...and she said no, no, no....

Travesty.  My little brother Mix and I were talking about some things that might pertain to this entry.  He is a very observant 11-year-old and asked “What the heck is this world coming to?”  He was amazed at the amount of “crazies” as he called them.  Reckless fame doesn’t teach these talented little ones to love and respect themselves for they are a special.  They fail to see they are a beautiful little gift of life that is capable of doing so much with a little love and respect!  🙂

Just interesting is all…hope and wish Ms. Winehouse the best!

Now today!  This morning…. I had a brilliant idea!  “I actually might think I am on to something my dear chap!”  (HORAY!)  I found new appreciation for my marketing passions.  I think I hypothetically figured it out….but not there quite yet!  🙂  Funny how idea flow in and out daily, hourly, minute by minute (as Michael McDonald might say…)…it is nice to know ONE might pan out!  Hope is a good thing.  Hope gets you through the darkest times…AND it is also hope that makes the darkness bright.

This period in my life is challenging to me.  I feel like I am just caught in the middle of ten crossfire’s and nothing is really of any productive manner either way I turn.  I am combating a million forces, blocking the negative and embracing the positive, karate chopping the ties of attachment to which I don’t need to have.  Life is confusing now, but good.

The other thing that I noticed this morning was the perspiration and moisture on my car this morning.

beautiful...

I try to notice at least one thing everyday that gives me wonder.  There is so much on this earth that is beauty right in front of our face!  We just choose not to pay attention to it with our hustle and bustle of life.  It stinks.  Just look around you…anywhere, where ever you are and look at what beauty surrounds you!!!  From little sprouts to dew drops, sunshine to shooting starts, a smile, a world of just simply beautiful moments!

Get to know yourself.  Respect yourself.  Then let yourself notice the beauty around you.  Once you are able to find love and respect for yourself, it will be so easy to find and locate the beauty around you!

Back to reality, OP!, there goes gravity…

Back in the office after a really great week in Orlando.  I am back to reality.   Stacks of papers and projects line my desk and work area.  It is funny how being gone for 4 days will do this to a person when she comes back:

See what I mean???

Last night, I realized that I am a connector person.  I have a way of affecting people just from being around them, and I realized to that this is all the more reason I need to be more positive.  This week was about discovery.  Self discovery, self exploration, and business.  It was through the trade show interactions, airport random conversations, and most of all getting to know the people I was surrounded with that I realized I live for connecting with people.  🙂  It really makes my soul burst!  I also came to the conclusion that I cast a lot of judgements.  I need to not do that.

I was reminded to sit in observation mode.  Who am I to tell others how to conduct and live their lives?  Who am I to say that the outfit so-and-so is wearing doesn’t match and definitely doesn’t flatter their body type?  I am not the one to say that.  I need to be in observation and discernment mode.  What I can tell you is this:  By looking at how a person acts, dresses, and carries themselves you can learn a lot about them as a customer, client or just a passer-by.  Everything they do whether they recognize it or not, has an indicator about them.  Someone who smiles all the time, are they genuinely happy?  OR, are they a great actor?  Sometimes the phrase, “you can see it in her eyes” holds so true.  You can tell a lot from looking someone directly square in the eyes.  Try it and watch for a reaction!  Do they turn away or do they look right back?  🙂  Peer into their soul!  Find out what makes them tick and just take it all into account.  Why are they so happy? or sad? or just looking like they could use a hug?

Observation mode is one of the most interesting positions to be in most of the time.  You sit, non judgmental and just watch.  It’s actually more enjoyable than a movie!  This is why I love traveling!  What a great eclectic culture of people in such a concentrated area!  It is just so fabulous to me and brings me great joy.

"don't judge us!" hehe

You can learn a ton about a person just from observing them.  It is not being creepy….well…….

(Not like this!) 😉

It is just literally a better way to reach out to others when you are a little more informed.  🙂  You may find that you enjoy people more when you stop looking for their flaws and just go with it!

Lunch Time Humor

Today of all days I wish I was flexible.  After about 13 years of cheerleading, you would think I would be but it just isn’t in my cards!  I have taken Yoga, stretched, etc.  But today I just feel old.

It’s a humbling feeling sitting with my friend Herb who is 95 (yes mark my word 95 years old!! I have had to remind him a few times!)  It is never a dull moment being in his company.  Well today we sat and had lunch at his Retirement Center.  He made a motion with his hand pointing at the old “biddies” talking loudly and causing a scene.  “They always have to be the center of freaking attention…Crap!” he said.  It seemed like that women were talking about us for some reason.  I am sure at their age they look for every piece of gossip they can and just talk to hear themselves speak.  You know how us women are!  😉  Their glares, their “quiet” whispers, and most of all their constant loud chair scoot!  OH man does that drive him nuts!

Today he was particularly on edge because he hasn’t been feeling well.  Good Ol’ Herb…maybe if your lucky I will share with you a few stories.  He is definitely a good friend.  ANYWAYS, Well first the glares started and you know that he didn’t miss that one.  He heckled from across the room “heeeey what are you looking at?!”  They quickly turned back around and acted as thought they were minding their own business.  EVERYONE knew it was Herb talking.  He has quite the reputation around there and that’s when we got the stares.  Man, that was the funniest thing ever.  If you could just imagine a bunch of old men and women just staring and looking disgruntled.  It was pretty awesome I am not going to lie.

Well we made it thru our usual soup and jello.  Herb ALWAYS gets that combination and as we were walking out this same women who just could not take her eyes off of us before asked if I was his daughter!?  We both got a good laugh out of this one.  He explained I was a friend’s daughter and his “Personal Secretary”.  She seemed satisfied with that response and we got the heck out of dodge!

You see this wasn’t the first time people had reason to wonder about me.  I have many friends who are usually older and more than likely male and people like to ponder what mischief I’m up to…  To me, that is the perfect position to be in!  One time I got mistaken as Herb’s “mistress”!  UH yeah right!  hahahaha.  That was the best one thus far.  I have been seen with my associate at a restaurant where his wife works and all the waitresses love to talk!  So point blank they asked his wife about who I was and man she played right along with it.

I think it is fun to leave people wonder.  I get the satisfaction and a good laugh at watching them.  What an amazing reminder not to assume and enjoy your company.  Who cares if you get stared down by some old women!  What are they going to do cane ya?

Look out! I saw what you did!
